George Lafayette Carter
George Lafayette Carter (1857-1936) was an American entrepreneur.

George L. Carter was born near Hillsville, Virginia on January 10, 1857.〔Homer Hickam, ''We Are Not Afraid: Strength and Courage for Our Nation from the Town of "October Sky", HCI, 2002, pp.13-15 ()〕〔(Johnson Depot )〕〔(Coalwood history )〕〔(West Virginia culture )〕 He owned land in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.〔〔 For example, he owned the land on which East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee was later built, and land in Bristol, Tennessee.〔〔(Carter museum )〕〔 He also created and owned the company towns of Coalwood, West Virginia and Caretta, West Virginia.〔〔〔 He bought some rail tracks and created the Clinchfield Railroad.〔〔
In 2007, the George L. Carter Railroad Museum opened on the East Tennessee State University campus.〔
